Great for display on a desk, February 20, 2007

Corgi, a long-time seller of die-cast models, really outdid themselves with this toy — it’s technically still a toy, but meant to be a display model. (Though I have to say it’s sturdy enough to be a toy, really.) It’s a faithful and compact model of the big E herself, the USS ENTERPRISE, NCC-1701, as she appeared in the original series of STAR TREK. The model is nice — of course, it’s not a precision display model; anyone who studies the design of the ship will find some fault with it, but for those of us who just really like this ship and are terrible model builders, it’s a great buy.I would love to see this series expanded — you can get the 1701-D (The Next Generation’s ENTERPRISE) as well as the too-often-used Klingon Bird of Prey, as well. I would really love to see added:* an ENTERPRISE refit (as seen in THE MOTION PICTURE)* a battle-damaged CONSTELLATION (specifically as seen in the new remastered series ep, THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE)* a Galileo shuttlecraft* a Klingon D-7 BattlecruiserI imagine mainstays such as the RELIANT (WRATH OF KHAN) and the EXCELSIOR (various movies/episodes) would be welcomed too.Further, since I have the pulpit, it’d be great if Corgi could expand this “display model” kind of quality to other series as well. Many modern representations of the SPACE: 1999 Eagle […]; what I have always wanted is some of the more obscure ships, or vessels that rarely make it into kit or toy form:* the DISCOVERY from 2001/2010* the LEONOV from 2001/2010* the ORION III Space Shuttle from 2001* hell, anything from 2001* the VALLEY FORGE from SILENT RUNNING* the DARK STAR* any of the capital ships from BABYLON 5* various vessels from SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO (aka STAR BLAZERS)* the Spinner from BLADE RUNNER* the C57D from FORBIDDEN PLANETAgain, some of these are available as garage kits or import toys, but for non-model-builders (or those with more modest budgets) a series like this is really welcomed.

It’s a pretty nice desktop or shelf display item, good detail overall and just about the right size. Not too big for a desk but not so small it looks like a cake decoration. It looks good but isn’t quite right on the accuracy level, most notably the nacelle angle is off and the warp drive intercoolers on the inside of both nacelles are glued on backwards…. nice job there, quality control.The biggest problem is you have a nice heavy little die-cast starship perched on a tiny sliver of brittle plastic. Would it have been too much to ask that the stand be made of metal too? The slightest stress to that pivot point and it’s SNAP! Your Enterprise will be laying on its side until you do some precise supergluing. My stand didn’t last a week of people picking up off my desk to examine and set back down. Don’t know if super glue was in Scotty’s toolbox but it seems to be holdin’ her together for now.Overall a nice display piece, and a very elaborate package. But if you’re going to go to the trouble to make such a detailed replica, why not make it 100% accurate? And in the name of Matt Jeffries, put a metal piece in that stand!

The nice, heavy metal starship is nice, my husband was impressed on Christmas day. Unfortunately, as he was placing the starship on its brittle plastic base, the tip of the brittle plastic base broke off. I should have read the 3 star ratings of this product so I could have warn my husband of this defect. We have invested in a small bottle of super-glue; I have a feeling we may have to use it more than once. It is quite peculiar that the manufacturer did not make the base out of metal as well.
